We have joined forces with "Idling Action London" which is a London wide initiative funded by the Mayors 'Air Quality Fund' to help reduce localised pollution created by drivers leaving their cars running whilst they are parked. Air pollution is a major environmental risk to health. Research by King’s College London
estimated that it contributed to around 9,500 deaths in London in 2010.
Both short and long-term exposure to pollutants has been proven to cause and exacerbate illnesses ranging from eczema and itchy eyes to asthma, cancer and lung disease.
What’s less well known is that air pollution is a particular concern for child health, as it can stunt lung growth and affect lung capacity. In fact, research conducted through a major study (the EXHALE project by King’s College London) found that the lung capacity of 8- and 9-year-olds in Tower Hamlets is 5% lower than the national average.
As a school, the year 5 children are designing posters and leaflets to help educate those that continue to idle outside Rockmount. Once the posters are ready the JTA's (Junior Travel Ambassadors) will be passing the leaflets out in the surrounding area.
The initiative was recently explained on Jackie Radio. Click here to listen to the radio clip.

Active Wednesdays!!
As a school, we have choosen to participate in an exciting nationwide challenge to encourage more children and their families to be more active when traveling to and from school. WOW - the year-round challenge- is a pupil-led initiative where children will self report how they get to school on a Wednesday. If they travel sustainably (walk, cycle or scoot) once a week for a month, they get rewarded with a badge.
What are the benefits of active travel? Active travel helps children feel happier and healthier and they arrive refreshed, fit and ready to learn. More active families means fewer cars on the road during the school run, helping to reduce congestion and pollution at the school gates.
What if you can’t be active when coming to school? If you live too far away or don’t have enough time to fit active travel in, you can park away from school and walk the last bit in. What about parking the other side of the REC and walking across?
The badges - The WOW badges are made using excess yoghurt-pot material and are produced in the UK (which minimises the carbon footprint) and all packaging is 100% biodegradable.
Thousands of schools and well over a million pupils enjoy the benefits of active travel to school across the UK.
LETS JOIN THEM!!
